This season of AMERICAN HORROR STORY has put a lot of focus on a real event known as the Blood Moon, when, according to the show, ghosts are able to walk the earth and take on human form again. So what is the Blood Moon and what kind of crazy shit goes down during an actual one? The Blood Moon is a rare eclipse of a Supermoon. This is when the moon is closest to the Earth making it appear extremely large in the sky. An eclipse of a Supermoon is very rare, only occurring five times during the 1900s. During an eclipse of one of these Supermoons the moon itself does not completely disappear, but rather takes on a reddish color. Over the years, this red specter has had some pretty bad mojo attached to it. Here are a few beliefs that have focused around the appearance of the Blood Moon.
The End of Times
There are some people who will site the Bible as a source of many doomsday predictions. Irvin Baxter of Endtime Ministries has made a nice living off his “end of times” prophecies mostly focusing on the appearance of the Blood Moon. His latest apocalyptic prediction was set for 2015’s Blood Moon which took place in September. Many other modern doom-sayers have also predicted the coming of the end under the Blood Moon. Most of them give us a bit more time before our civilizations demise.
The Spanish Inquisition
The Tribunal of Holy Office of the Inquisition was established in 1478. More commonly referred to as the Spanish Inquisition, it was intended to install and regulate Spain’s Catholic orthodoxy. During this period, 150,000 Jews were charged with crimes against the church, and 5,000 were executed. It was during the final year of the Spanish Inquisition, in 1492 under a Blood Moon, when all Jews who would not convert to Christianity were officially expelled from Spain.
The Blood Moon is a factor in numerous Pagan beliefs and rituals, usually perceiving it as a time of celebration and rebirth. In some Wiccan beliefs, the Blood Moon is a time to remember those who have left this world and to make offerings to them. It is also known as a Harvest Moon, or a handy reminder that winter is coming, and you should store up some food pronto.
2015’s Blood Moon was said to have sparked a huge upsweep in gang violence. One Chicago source stated that four people were killed while another 52 were wounded during this single lunar event. A similar story was reported on the Los Angeles neighborhood of Compton where 22 people were murdered, and 31 were wounded, although the validity of this claim has been heavily debated and debunked by some sources.
