A.I. tech can be a wonderful thing… until it turns on you.
In what seems like the first stage of the robot apocalypse we’ve all been warned about, users of Amazon Echo devices have been freaking out over an apparent glitch that randomly replaces voice-enabled assistant Alexa’s soothing, helpful tones with spontaneous fits of extremely creepy laughter.
Multiple news outlets have reported cases of Echo users freaked out by the anomaly, which as of this writing has been brought to the company’s attention.
“We’re aware of this and working to fix it,” Amazon said in response to the press.
BuzzFeed News compiled a lengthy list of social media comments from users who were nearly scared to death by the help-bot’s random psychotic outbursts.
“There’s a good chance I get murdered tonight,” tweeted one user, while a Redditor claimed Alexa refused multiple requests to turn their house lights off before laughing at them as well.
“After the third request, Alexa stopped responding and instead did an evil laugh,” the user claims. “The laugh wasn’t in the Alexa voice. It sounded like a real person.”
In several cases, Echo users were so freaked out they turned the device off, and may never turn it back on again… assuming, of course, Alexa doesn’t simply take over and seize control of their homes out of spite… or for more nefarious reasons.
