Some people are famous for producing movies: Jerry Bruckheimer. The Weinsteins. Dino De Laurentiis. Some people are famous for producing horror movies: Roger Corman. Charles Band. Jason Blum. And some people aren’t known for producing movies at all. A lot of actors find themselves producing as they progress further into their careers. Usually their credits will be filled with a bunch of movies starring themselves and maybe a project by an up-and-coming director or two in whatever genre the public knows them for.
However, it is my theory that everyone secretly wants to be involved in a horror film at some point in their lives. That’s how we ended up with the six films on this list, of well-known genre movies produced by the very last person you’d ever expect. Did you know that…
Will Ferrell Provided Some Breadcrumbs for HANSEL AND GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS
If there are any two people in the world I would least expect to have worked together, it’s definitely ANCHORMAN star Will Ferrell and DEAD SNOW director Tommy Wirkola. And yet, somehow it happened. Their collaboration, HANSEL AND GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS, wasn’t spectacularly well received, but it stands as a monument to just how incredibly strange Hollywood connections can get.
Ben Stiller was the Travel Agent for the Gory Vacation Horror Flick THE RUINS
THE RUINS is a gross-out vacation-gone-awry picture that had the capacity to shock even during the reign of SAW. That’s not exactly the type of material you typically associate with the man behind ZOOLANDER, but nevertheless Ben Stiller has a prominent producer credit. I guess there really is more to the man than being really, really, ridiculously good looking.
Tom Cruise Saw Dead People with THE OTHERS
It’s probably not surprising to see Tom Cruise’s name in the credits of the 2001 haunted house classic THE OTHERS, considering that he was married to star Nicole Kidman at the time. But it’s definitely startling that such a huge movie star spent any amount of time on such a cerebral, gothic thriller.
JEEPERS CREEPERS, Where’d You Get Those Peepers? From Francis Ford Coppola!
I’ll refrain from commenting about the ever-controversial JEEPERS CREEPERS series, but it’s certainly intriguing that THE GODFATHER director Francis Ford Coppola was behind these schlocky millennium monster pictures.
Eva Longoria Loaded JOHN WICK’s Gun
DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES star Eva Longoria has a lot up her sleeve behind-the-camera, and included among all that is a gun. Longoria was a driving force behind the action hit JOHN WICK, which gave Keanu Reeves another crack at action stardom.
Nicolas Cage Stood in the SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE
SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE is an eerily meta film about an actual vampire on the set of F. W. Murnau’s NOSFERATU. Who better to bring that bonkers story to life than everyone’s favorite weirdo movie star Nicolas Cage? He must have gotten the vampire bug after starring in the 1988 comedy VAMPIRE’S KISS.
