Last week, I recommended a handful of brand new horror titles that have been gaining quite a reputation among fellow horror enthusiasts. But, there are plenty of other things to be found in their current library selection. Hell, they’ve got plenty of the “classics” on there. So, just in case you’ve missed these over the years for whatever reason, here are 5 horror classics you can find on Shudder right now!
If you’ve never seen Stuart Gordon’s 1985 gorefest, now is the time to get on it! For those of you that have a soft spot for things like EVIL DEAD 2 or DEAD ALIVE, this wacky feature falls somewhere in that sweet spot of horror comedy hybrids. By comedy, I mean more from the dark morbid craziness going on onscreen rather than characters cracking jokes. Dan Cain is a talented medical student that puts an ad out for a roommate, and what he gets is Herbert West, an eccentric and star making performance by Jeffrey Combs. West has almost cracked the code for human re-animation. Except… the corpses come back as crazed, blood-thirsty, super strong ghouls! Complete with a PSYCHO-esque score by Richard Band, RE-ANIMATOR is just a great time.
When the work of Clive Barker hit the book stands, even famed author Stephen King took note and was quoted as saying, “I have seen the future of horror, and his name is Clive Barker!” And so, if you haven’t seen it yet, you owe it to yourself to watch his historic directorial debut which introduced the world to Pinhead. While most might think the movie is about the iconic looking monster & his brood of equally terrifying cenobites, it’s actually a story of love and lust gone mad! A cheating wife is helping her husband’s brother/her lover regain his physical form by luring men back to her house and murdering them! Frank, narrowly escaped the clutches of the cenobites and broke out of hell, but you know that that’s not going to end well! Barker didn’t get to direct nearly as many features as we deserved, but we will always have his landmark debut!
William Lustig’s 1988 thriller is about a man in a cop uniform that’s killing off random innocent bystanders. Caught in the middle is Bruce Campbell (!), an officer caught cheating on his wife with another officer and a potential suspect for the “maniac cop.” Turns out, it’s a traditional case of good old fashioned revenge; a wronged super cop that was set up and killed behind bars, or was he? This is a fun one that eventually spawned two sequels! And with an upcoming remake in the works, now’s a good time to see where it all began!
This one recently got the special edition treatment on Blu-Ray thanks to Arrow Video in the UK, and the great thing about that is people are rediscovering and re-evaluating this 1985 gem directed by Steve Miner and produced by FRIDAY THE 13TH creator Sean Cunningham. William Katt is author Roger Cobb. After losing his child, and separating from his wife, he decides to retire to his aunt’s old house and pen his next novel. But there’s more to this house than meets the eye, and a ghost from his past is back to settle the score! Featuring George Wendt from CHEERS, HOUSE is a pure horror fun!
If you’ve yet to experience the surreal, nightmarish cinema-scapes of Lucio Fulci, this will be a good litmus test! This 1981 Italian cult classic is a zombie movie unlike anything you’ve ever seen. A young woman who inherits an old house in Louisiana, a blind girl with white eyes and her seeing eye dog, a clumsy librarian that gets devoured by spiders, and a Doctor that discovers a gateway to hell, THE BEYOND is a mind-bending descent into the gates of the unknown!
