After teasing fans mercilessly with some gorgeous visual glimpses and a recent teaser, Columbia Pictures just unveiled the first full trailer for the long-awaited sequel to Ridley Scott’s groundbreaking 1982 classic BLADE RUNNER… and so far it’s looking and sounding pretty damn amazing.
Oscar-nominated director Denis Villeneuve (ARRIVAL) is assuming the director’s duties from Scott — who serves as executive producer — with original star Harrison Ford returning to the iconic role of hard-boiled future cop Rick Deckard, who this time appears to be in hiding within the desolate, abandoned ruins of Los Angeles.
Taking the lead role as “Officer K,” Ryan Gosling (who appears to be channeling some of his DRIVE character here) is on a mission to unlock an Earth-shattering secret, which may itself be linked to a new generation of replicants — genetically-designed human slaves — which Deckard once hunted. Naturally, K’s quest leads him to Deckard’s doorstep.
The trailer also gives some screen time to the supporting players — including Robin Wright, Jared Leto, and Dave Bautista; also prominent here is the music of Jóhann Jóhannsson, referencing the classic BLADE RUNNER theme by Vangelis.
Fans of the original cult classic (myself included) will be on pins and needles after watching this one — after all, it’s got some big cinematic shoes to fill. Considering original co-screenwriter Hampton Fancher and co-producer Bud Yorkin are returning to the team, not to mention Edward James Olmos reprising his amazing character Gaff, there’s a lot to be hopeful for in the run-up to the film’s release on October 6…
