After making the rounds at drive-ins and seedy cinemas throughout the ‘70s — often paired with LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT — and a second life on countless public-domain home video releases, S.F. Brownrigg’s gritty, twisted cult classic DON’T LOOK IN THE BASEMENT [one of our favorite DON’T! movies], is making genre headlines again this year.
Not only is Brownrigg’s son working on a much-belated sequel to the 1973 original, but a remake entitled DEATH WARD 13 is now in the making — with Todd Nunes (ALL THROUGH THE HOUSE) in the director’s chair, and horror-rock legend Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein playing the film’s most diabolical villain.
After decades as lead guitarist for the iconic Misfits, followed by the founding of solo project DOYLE, the musclebound axe-man will be taking on his first leading role in a feature film when DEATH WARD 13 goes before the cameras later this year.
“It’s time to release the beast on the big screen,” Doyle announced. “Let the killing begin!”
Although it’s set in 1973, DEATH WARD 13 is both a direct remake of BASEMENT and a return to that film’s source material — Edgar Allan Poe’s classic inmates-take-over-the-asylum tale “The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether.” The producers promise an abundance of gory, old-school practical effects in a tale of “botched lobotomies, necrophilia, sexual deviance, and violent psychopaths.” The most sadistic of these — a role to be filled by Doyle — is known as “The Duke.”
“I’m a big fan of Doyle and his music and always thought he would make a menacing horror movie villain,” Nunes says. “With his threatening looks and massive build, this man will scare the crap out of everyone.”
Doyle’s evil agenda looks pretty packed this year — in addition to his role, he’s in talks to compose original music for the film… but right now, he’s still touring to promote the new DOYLE album AS WE DIE (the follow-up to their 2013 full-length debut ABOMINATOR), which is slated to release on May 5.
