R.I.P. Bill Paxton

Well this is awful news to wake up to.

It appears the great Bill Paxton has passed away. He was 61.

According to an official family statement, “It is with heavy hearts we share the news that Bill Paxton has passed away due to complications from surgery. A loving husband and father, Bill began his career in Hollywood working on films in the art department and went on to have an illustrious career spanning four decades as a beloved and prolific actor and filmmaker. Bill’s passion for the arts was felt by all who knew him, and his warmth and tireless energy were undeniable. We ask to please respect the family’s wish for privacy as they mourn the loss of their adored husband and father.”

Paxton was nominated for an Emmy based on his work for HATFIELDS AND MCCOYS, did 5 seasons of BIG LOVE, and appeared in other recent TV series such as TRAINING DAY, AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. and TEXAS RISING. But us genre fans will always love and appreciate his appearances in ALIENS, TERMINATOR, NEAR DARK, PREDATOR 2, CLUB DREAD, Sam Raimi’s A SIMPLE PLAN, BRAIN DEAD, and his own directorial debut, the stellar and scary FRAILTY.

I still think his performance as “Chet” in John Hughes comedy classic WEIRD SCIENCE is the greatest older brother villain in 80’s cinema history.

This one hurts.
