I travel to a lot of horror conventions and see a lot of cosplay. But few things have impressed me quite as much as the Morales sisters and their deep appreciation for the horror genre. Even more impressive – they are just kids, but yet they tackle niche, lesser-known horror movies (like CURTAINS and HELLO MARY LOU: PROM NIGHT 2), CreepyPastas, and even some characters of their own creation.
The three Morales sisters (Marilyn- age 6, Scarlett- age 13, and Gabriela- age 16) began horror cosplaying after they attended a few horror conventions and noticed their weren’t a lot of female horror cosplayers and very few kids. They all dressed up for the next convention and got a great response, so they kept it going. The girls now have a big fan following and regularly speak at horror conventions about their love of the genre and how they select and create their costumes.
When asked what was rewarding about cosplaying, the girls discussed how fun it is to be scary and see everyone’s reactions to their outfits. They also said, “We’ve been told by other children, as well as a few adults, that they started cosplaying because they’d seen our costumes, and we inspired them to try it. It feels great to know that something we did has inspired someone else to cosplay.”
