The Hollywood Reporter has made it an annual event to do a series of round table interviews once Oscar season rolls around. Although it’s not “horror” per se, most people that love the genre just have an general appreciation for the craft of directing, so the director’s round table is one I look most forward to.
This year, they’ve assembled Mel Gibson (HACKSAW RIDGE), Oliver Stone (SNOWDEN), Denzel Washington (FENCES), Damien Chazelle (LA LA LAND), Mira Nair (QUEEN OF KATWE), and Barry Jenkins (MOONLIGHT) for another full, uncensored discussion on all aspects of how they tackled their respective films, the challenges of being a director, and reminiscing about when they fell in love with film.
There are a lot of great, candid stories shared here. Hell, I just like that one of the first movies Denzel Washington watched over and over again as a kid was CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON. And LA LA LAND / WHIPLASH writer/director Damien Chazelle penned the scripts to 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE, GRAND PIANO and THE LAST EXORCISM PART II, so he’s got some horror pedigree!
If you don’t have the hour to carve aside for this, The Hollywood Reporter always posts a transcript culled from the best bits of the discussion. You can read that over on their website right here.
