Are You Ready For Universal’s THE MUMMY With Tom Cruise? The First Trailer Is Here!

Well, this is it.

Universal Studios is banking on relaunching their line of world famous Universal Monster Movies in a “shared universe” starting with next year’s THE MUMMY, which arrives in theaters on June 9th, 2017.

Tom Cruise stars, with Alex Kurtzman (STAR TREK) directing from a script by Christopher McQuarrie (MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE ROGUE NATION) & Jon Spaihts (PROMETHEUS). Sofia Boutella (KINGSMAN) plays Ahmanet, aka THE MUMMY! And despite being a good 7 months away, the first action packed trailer has just dropped! Feast your eyes on the new version of THE MUMMY below!

Few things. It’s definitely not what I expected at all. It’s nothing like the original MUMMY, nor the Brendon Fraser adventure spectacles. But hey, Cruise is usually known only to attach himself to top notch projects and you’ve got one of the guys behind THE USUAL SUSPECTS writing this thing. Also of note? We get a glimpse at Russell Crowe in the trailer who is playing Dr. Henry Jekyll! So, the shared universe, at least for these interpretations of the characters, starts here!

And that’s the other thing I want to address quickly, as a life-long Universal Monster fan. I know that ridiculous term, “shared universe,” has been thrown around a lot lately because of the Marvel movies, and look, I grew up a comic kid so I love those movies too. But as it pertains to the Universal Monster Movies, they already were in a shared universe. In fact, they did it before anyone else! Each subsequent sequel, whether it was FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLF MAN or HOUSE OF FRANKENSTEIN or HOUSE OF DRACULA picked up where the last film left off. Hell, ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN is the original (and still best!) monster mash in my opinion. So, despite the gimmick of putting all these monsters together in a series of movies and calling it a “shared universe,” I just hope it’s done with sincerity and respect to what’s come before.
