Horror anthologies had a massive heyday in the 1980s, but recently the style has made a strong comeback. Below are six killer horror anthologies that are currently on Netflix Instant. These are from a variety of time periods and use an assortment of framing devices, but all are sure to chill.
TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE: THE MOVIE (1990)
This is an anthology classic! Debbie Harry plays a witch who traps a young boy and plans to eat him. While she prepares the rest of her dinner, the boy delays her progress by telling her creepy stories. The “gargoyle” tale is epic!
The film works its way through the major calendar holidays, weaving terrifying stories for each one. Stand-outs are Valentine’s Day, Easter, and Father’s Day!
THE ABCS OF DEATH (2012)
Each letter is a horror segment- A is for Apocalypse, B is for Bigfoot, and so on. The styles and quality are wildly varied, but there are some really great shorts mixed into the bunch.
ABCS OF DEATH 2 (2014)
I actually like part two a lot more than part one. This films feel more diverse with a lot of international flavors mixed in. The segments also seem to be more prepared and better put together.
V/H/S boasts some of the best creators in the contemporary horror industry- Adam Wingard, Ty West, Radio Silence, and several others. Each slice uses the concept that the shorts are found footage films shot on old VHS tapes.

The sequel utilizes the framework of a private investigator who finds a stack of VHS tapes when exploring a teen’s disappearance. Most of the directors are different from the first film, offering multiple styles and some nice diversity. The stand-out segment here is Safe Haven which still gives me chills!
