31 Horror Films For October: Blumhouse.com Editor-in-Chief Rebekah McKendry’s Picks

As has already been mentioned by my SHOCK WAVES co-hosts Elric Kane (check out his list here) and Rob G (read his list here), we cover a vast amount of horror movies every week on the SHOCK WAVES Podcast. And every show, I leave with a few titles I have not yet seen jotted down on a piece of scratch paper. I then go home, make nachos and tea, and begin searching for these horror movies that I have somehow missed. This passion for discovering new horror films is shared between co-hosts and listeners, and so we were asked to create “31 Days of Horror” viewing lists for October.

I have thought for days about how to best shape a list and what to include. Do I include my true personal favorites? Well, people might get sick of creature features and shark movies in the first week.

Do I go “deep cuts”? That could be fun, but it could also be frustratingly sucky if the bulk of the movies are really hard to find.

Or do I march ahead with the standard spooky classics that everyone has already seen, but are considered staples of the holiday- movies like HALLOWEEN, FRIDAY THE 13TH and THE EXORCIST?

I eventually decided I wanted a good mix of scares and fun. I also wanted to include a few deep cut gems that people likely haven’t seen, but could still locate fairly easily.

And, though I may endure comments about how dare I leave out HALLOWEEN, I did ultimately decide to avoid the horror big guns. Sorry HALLOWEEN and FRIDAY THE 13TH. Of course, I love you the most! But I love you all year long! During October, it’s kinda nice to drink pumpkin beer, dress up in whatever costume I can cobble together from the Goodwill, and watch something a little different.

I rewrote this list multiple times, adding and then eventually nixing everything from SLUGS to FRANKENHOOKER to DAGON to WARLOCK. Why would I even think to include WARLOCK?!? Clearly I was having a mental breakdown. Somehow I carved out a list that I feel is a perfect mix of time periods, tones, nationalities, sub-genres, and even budgets ranging from small indie films to massive studio pics.

I hope you enjoy my 31 Days of Horror!
