At this point, hopefully you’ve had the time to sink your teeth into Netflix’s new surprise hit series STRANGER THINGS. I know for myself personally, within 5 minutes of the first episode, I was aware that I’d found something special, and hence decided to watch only one episode per day for 8 days straight, that way I could savor this wonderful show, which quite frankly, felt like it came out of nowhere.
One of the things people seem to be responding to is how brilliantly it homages and evokes the innocence of 80’s films, television and pop culture. It’s set in that time period, and somehow manages to feel like an adaptation to a long lost 80’s Stephen King novel, if done by Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment. It’s obvious that show creators Matt and Ross Duffer (“The Duffer Brothers”) wear their love of the genre on their sleeves and infuse this material with it.
But how about the visual references to the show’s influences? Vimeo user Ulysse Thevenon has put together the following 5 minute clip which shows side-by-side scenes from STRANGER THINGS as paired up with it’s many visual inspirations, including Spielberg’s ET, THE GOONIES, Ridley Scott’s ALIEN, Tobe Hooper’s POLTERGEIST, CLOSE ENCOUNTERS, A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET and much, much more. Have a look.
And speaking of pop culture references, if you want to read a list of every single 80’s pop culture reference mentioned on STRANGER THINGS, the gang over on the Inverse website have gone above and beyond with their article showcasing them all, broken down by individual episode! Be sure to check it out.
Have you finished STRANGER THINGS yet? If not, what are you waiting for? It’s great!
