Even for serious horror fans like us, it’s really hard to hang onto that “Every Day is Halloween” feeling while you’re being fried alive in the midsummer heat… but we’ve got it on good authority that the folks behind this year’s Midsummer Scream Halloween Festival, taking place July 30 & 31 in Long Beach, CA, will be providing a most welcome Trick-or-Treat retreat.
I’m stoked to announce that yours truly and my brilliant Blumhouse.com colleagues John Humphrey and Stephen Johnson will be hosting a panel entitled Blumhouse.com Presents: Creepypastas, Urban Legends, and Ghost Stories.
As the name suggests, we’ll be examining many of the “weird world” topics explored on this site, and discussing why we’re so obsessed with stories of the weird and macabre in this age of instantaneous information.
As much as we want you to come talk weirdness with us, the rest of Midsummer Scream is looking pretty awesome for horror fans of all stripes.
Panels include demonstrations of “Spooky Science,” selections from this year’s Etheria Film Festival, virtual reality horror demos, overviews of Halloween history and SoCal’s spookiest ghost towns, previews of the latest haunted attractions and interactive scare events (including previews of this year’s themes at Knotts’ Scary Farm, Queen Mary’s Dark Harbor, Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights), and Q&A with designers from AMERICAN HORROR STORY: HOTEL and Jim Henson’s Creature Shop.
Not to play favorites or anything, but I’m particularly interested in checking out GORLESQUE, billed as “L.A.’s Sexiest Haunted House”… here’s a little preview:
Haunt fans will get a chance to get the living crap scared out of them in the “Scare Zone,” a massive expanse containing fully-operational previews of more than a dozen extreme Halloween attractions.
Also represented this year is the famous Winchester Mystery House, one of the many haunted historic locations we’ve covered here on the site: the panel will include discussion of their new Halloween candlelight tours, and production of the upcoming WINCHESTER film starring Helen Mirren.
Saturday night’s festivities also include a Noche de los Muertos dance party and ‘80s costume contest, featuring live music from members of Oingo Boingo!
It all happens this Saturday and Sunday (July 30 & 31) at California’s Long Beach Convention Center. Visit MidsummerScream.org for ticket info and event details.
Hope to scare you there!
