The 5 Coolest San Diego Comic-Con 2016 Exclusive Horror Toys

Many of the coolest toys in my collection came straight out of San Diego’s annual Comic-Con, including NECA’s Super Freddy and Mrs. Voorhees figures, Funko’s unmasked Jason Voorhees POP! vinyl, and McFarlane’s black and white, blood-covered Michonne. Needless to say, it’s always exciting to see what those and other companies are going to be offering up to us horror fans at the event each year, and this year’s roster of exclusive toys is no less impressive than years past.

With the 2016 Comic-Con fast approaching, let’s preview the best exclusives!

The company that always pulls out the biggest guns at SDCC is NECA, and this year they’re beefing up their ever-expanding ALIEN toy line with the first ever action figure of beloved ALIENS character Rebecca “Newt” Jorden. The 7″ figure of Ellen Ripley’s surrogate daughter, shown off during “Alien Day” earlier this year,  will come packaged with a marine helmet, photograph, and doll head. Though she will initially be available only at Comic-Con, NECA has recently teased that the Newt figure will eventually be up for grabs elsewhere. So if you can’t make it to the event this year, there’s still hope!

Speaking of ALIENS, Super7 is the independent company responsible for Funko’s recent wave of ReAction Figures, which kicked off with a line of ALIEN toys, and this year they’re bringing a big ole 18″ Xenomorph to Comic-Con. Back in 1979, Kenner put out an 18″ ALIEN toy that was quickly pulled off shelves for being too terrifying, and Super7’s 2016 SDCC Exclusive pays tribute to that sought-after toy while also putting an ALIENS spin on it. This version of the iconic 18″ toy depicts a Xenomorph Warrior from the sequel, and it’s made to look like an unpainted prototype that Kenner was working on. In reality, Kenner never planned on making such a toy, but it’s fun to imagine that they did!

On THE WALKING DEAD television show, we still have no idea whose brains Negan bashed in at the end of Season 6. In the comic books, however, it was Glenn who met the business end of Lucille, and McFarlane pays tribute to that gruesome Issue #100 death scene with this SDCC Exclusive two-pack. Available in both black & white and blood-splattered full color, the set comes with figures of Negan and Glenn, and the real selling point here is the additional “smashed” Glenn head that’s included. Cranium caved in and eyeball hanging out, the bonus head is lifted right from the pages of the comic book. The set also includes a knife, an axe, and of course, Negan’s trusty friend Lucille.

Funko has made so many different POP! vinyl figures based on THE WALKING DEAD that it’s become impossible to keep track of them all, and it doesn’t help that many of them are exclusive to various different stores and events. Back in 2014, the company’s Headless Hershel POP! arguably stole the show, and this year they’re hoping to impress fans with their Burning Walker vinyl toy. I mean, there’s nothing cuter than a flaming zombie… right? RIGHT?!

While the dolls may be geared towards children, I can’t help but be a fan of Mattel’s Monster High line, which depicts the daughters (and sometimes the sons) of legendary monsters like Dracula, the Mummy, the Wolf Man, and even the Loch Ness Monster. At this year’s Comic-Con, Monster High joins forces with GHOSTBUSTERS for this exclusive doll of character Frankie Stein (the daughter of Frankenstein’s monster), who’s dressed like a reboot Ghostbuster and comes equipped with a Proton Pack. Also included, so that Frankie has something to bust, is a mini Slimer figure.

Other 2016 Comic-Con Exclusives that horror fans should keep an eye out for include Mattel’s GHOSTBUSTERS set featuring a light-up Rowan figure and 1.5″ mini-figures of the new quartet; Funko’s POP! vinyl figure of Slimer riding around a red Ecto-1; Funko’s Vampire Buffy and Vampire Angel POP! two-pack; Funko’s set of four “glow glitter” HAUNTED MANSION POP! vinyl toys; and NECA’s translucent Cloaked Scar Predator from ALIEN VS. PREDATOR.

The 2016 San Diego Comic-Con runs from July 21st to the 24th.
