When it comes to bridging the gap between horror films, pop culture and art, we often turn to our friends at Hyaena Gallery who host monthly exhibits that manage to celebrate all three of those things in style. Last month, they had a pretty unique set-up for the Monsterpalooza convention here in Los Angeles, a show that takes place twice a year and one that Hyaena Gallery always participates in. Their regular roster of artists contribute 3D portraits, digital prints and paintings that look cool on their own, but become enhanced once you put on a pair of 3D glasses.
For those that missed the exhibit at the convention, they currently have the 3D exhibit, titled “For Those Who Slept…5” on display at their Burbank location (over on 1928 W. Olive Ave.) through the rest of May. Below is a selection of some of the pieces, but I must iterate that these pictures do not do the paintings justice, as they’re meant to be seen with 3D glasses, which the gallery owners will hand you on the way in. But even not in 3D, these are all pretty cool!
Fearful that I would be unable to articulate how I felt about seeing these pieces in text for this article, I also decided to take a little bit of video to share with all of you.
The thing I love about Hyaena is that while you can own an original piece of art for a fairly affordable price, if you’re a little low one month, they often offer smaller print recreations so that you can own some version of the art you want. I managed to snag the 3 prints from artist Dave Warner of DONNIE DARKO, PREDATOR and the “Don’t Blink” DOCTOR WHO tribute. Gallery owner Bill Shafer graciously gave me a few pairs of the 3D glasses with my purchase so now I can frame and hang these bad-boys up in my place to share with my guests.
If you’re in the Los Angeles area, be sure to pop over to Hyaena Gallery, located at 1928 W. Olive Ave, Burbank, CA 91506 to see these for yourself, or you can make purchases and see even more art via their official website right here.
