Speaking as a father, I can attest to the fact that children are pretty damn creepy. Most parents will question occasionally if their 3-year-old is actually possessed as they demonically throw crayons or hurl their milk at the wall. But in movies, it gets much worse.
THE DARKNESS is opening in theaters on May 13th and focuses on a family who is terrorized by an evil spirit, including taking possession of their young son. To celebrate another addition to the “creepy kid” catalog, here are ten films about possessed children that will make you rethink starting a brood of your own.
THE CHILDREN (2008)
I loved the concept of this film- a flu-like illness that turns children into homicidal maniacs starting with the youngest and working its way up. THE CHILDREN is one of those films that tears a parent apart. Don’t miss this one!
THE EXORCIST (1973)
The granddaddy of all child possession films, THE EXORCIST set the standard for the genre. I’m not sure if there is anything more frightening then Linda Blair crawling backwards down the stairs or her rotating head.
THE SHINING (1980)
Never underestimate the power of a little man who lives in your finger. Danny’s possession was a bit more helpful than your normal possession, but still pretty creepy. “Danny’s not here right now Mrs. Torrence…..”
PET SEMETARY (1989)
I’m pretty sure this movie made the birth control industry billions of dollars. Little Gage’s declaration that he was done playing with Mommy and wanted to play with Daddy was enough to make an entire generation question parenthood.
THE BEYOND (1981)
From Lucio Fulci’s GATES OF HELL trilogy comes a story of zombies, possession, flesh-eating spiders, and a precariously placed jar of acid. The little redhead girl with the pigtails didn’t get too much possession time before getting her head unceremoniously blown off.
ANGEL HEART (1987)
This is a head-trippy voodoo film from the director of PINK FLOYD’S THE WALL. It features the cutest bright eyed bouncing baby boy who, during the creepiest moments of the film, turns into a glaring demonic nightmare.
Tristana Medeiros was a sweet little girl who was the cause of the entire outbreak. She actually has a great backstory if you follow all the films and read the comics!
Focusing on the Jewish legend of the Dybbuk Box, POSSESSION presents a evil spirit taking over the body of an adolescent girl. There are some rather chilling visuals in this one. Ahh- fingers in her throat!
SINISTER proved any kid could be a killer provided they were both under the control of a demon and able to build an elaborate Rube Goldberg device capable of murdering their entire family.
VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED (1995)
When all the kids in your neighborhood are born with white hair and blue eyes, it may be time to consider moving, especially when Superman and Luke Skywalker can’t help you (both Christopher Reeve and Mark Hamill appear in the film).
Bonus… THE CHILDREN (1980)
This is a low budget half possession/half zombie flick. It has all the warts of a low budget film, but is still pretty damn scary.
