Twice a year, we’re treated to one of the biggest and best conventions in the States, MONSTERPALOOZA! For the last 6 years, the event, which focuses primarily on the celebration of special FX make-up, has been housed ably in the Burbank Marriott hotel and each & every year, the show keeps growing by leaps and bounds. The Spring show is the main event, while a slightly smaller version of it (dubbed “Son of Monsterpalooza”) kicks off the Halloween season in September. But this past weekend marked the convention’s first move – from the Burbank Marriott to the much bigger Pasadena Convention Center.
It’s safe to say that the move was welcome – even more people attended than ever before, making for a fun-filled weekend of monsters, ghouls and groovy vibes. As usual, tons of vendors were set up selling everything from t-shirts, to movies, to masks, to posters, and more. All the biggest names in the FX industry were set up for demonstrations and to show off their latest products. And of course, the main panel hall hosted a myriad of events including a Blumhouse.com panel on “The State Of Horror,” tributes to THE WOLF MAN, STARSHIP TROOPERS and much, much more.
Besides a long list of horror celebrities signing autographs in the main hallway, you could spot filmmakers such as JJ Abrams and Guillermo del Toro just checking out the floor as fans. On Sunday, the legendary Dick Van Dyke was spotted chatting with Sara Karloff, and on Saturday night, surprise guest Gary Oldman came out to present Greg Cannom with a lifetime achievement award.
Simply put, Monsterpalooza has always been a fan favorite convention for everyone that just loves their monsters, and the turnout this weekend proved our community is still going strong. Enjoy below a gallery of some of the cooler things we saw this weekend! And be sure to “like” the official Monsterpalooza Facebook page so you can keep tabs on future conventions!
