Back in August of 2014, legendary game designer Hideo Kojima (Metal Gear Solid) and genre icon Guillermo Del Toro (PAN’S LABYRINTH, CRIMSON PEAK) released P.T., a playable teaser for Silent Hills (yes, plural), Sony’s proposed (and later dropped) experimental reboot/sequel to the Silent Hill game series… and gamers everywhere immediately freaked out.
The teaser’s bizarre nightmare scenario creates a GROUNDHOG DAY-type cycle, trapping the player in a small location and forcing them into a loop of surreal repeating events, each time varying tiny details with clues to unlock the next phase of play. This immersive, mind-bending environment was enhanced by some of the scariest sound design ever featured in a game.
Recently, an intrepid team of Michigan-based filmmakers calling themselves “The Oddest of the Odd” adapted the P.T. teaser into a live-action short film… and it’s even creepier than its inspiration. We highly recommend turning your lights off and putting on headphones for a truly immersive experience.
If you missed or were unable to play the P.T. teaser for PlayStation 4, you can watch this “Found Footage Edit” of the entire game teaser play-through (the same lights-off, phones-on recommendation applies here too):
