Long since rumored, King himself confirmed this morning that Idris Elba will be the gunslinger and Matthew McConaughey will be the man in black. Their responses were equally as exciting:

Entertainment Weekly got the full scoop on the movie as they spoke both to King and director & co-writer Nikolaj Arcel on what we can expect.
“What Stephen King does best is mixing the everyday, or what you might call the mundane, with the fantastical,” says Arcel. “In my view, [The Dark Tower] novels are a mix between sci-fi and fantasy and modern times. That exact mix is so Stephen King.”
With 8 novels to cull from and filming set to begin in South Africa in the next seven weeks, fans of the series are curious which of the books will be adapted for the movie. It’s definitely not starting at the very beginning as most would assume.
King told EW: “[The movie] starts in media res, in the middle of the story instead of at the beginning, which may upset some of the fans a little bit, but they’ll get behind it, because it is the story.” Arcel added this clue: “A lot of it takes place in our day, in the modern world.”
THE DARK TOWER is scheduled to hit theaters on January 13th, 2017 from Sony Pictures.
