Trying to live up to the Valentine’s Day hype can be scary. These days, a heart-shaped box of chocolates from the gas station just won’t cut it. Even the “dinner and a movie” date has become stale. Thankfully, there is a superior date option for this Valentine’s Day: Take your significant other to a haunted house! It may sound strange, but it’s the only date GUARANTEED to bring you and your love closer–emotionally, chemically, and physically. Fear and love are two sides of the same twisted coin, after all. Both emotions produce intense feelings that make our bodies do weird things like quicken our heart beat, pump adrenaline into our bloodstream, and make us sweat. The horror in a haunted house may be fabricated with red paint and strobe lights, but the bond the fear creates between you two love birds will be the real deal. Sold? Here are the top five Valentine’s events at haunted houses around the country:
The 13th Floor Haunted Houses are opening up their doors in several locations for “Valentine X.” This year, Valentine X’s plot revolves around “the demon of nightmares.” Here is the backstory: “Some say they’ve witnessed the demon of nightmares, but no evidence exists. As she only appears in the form of a lover, neighbor, friend, or acquaintance, she can be difficult for anyone to recognize, much less catch. This Valentine’s Weekend, the demon of nightmares and her possessed will steal your heart in candlelit horror.” Sounds utterly romantic—and like a fire hazard. Get tickets here.
Dark Hour’s “Love is Blind” attraction is also heavily story-based. Before you make your way to Dark Hour for the festivities, you need to know a little bit about Giselle Scuro. Giselle was a young witch who fell in love with a mere mortal dude. She kept her witchiness from him until one day she could no longer hold onto the secret. Unbeknownst to Giselle, her jealous witch sister already told her lover dude the truth. The man, filled with disgust and horror, promptly hung himself. Broken-hearted Giselle cast a spell of darkness over the countryside and vowed that everyone would have to suffer along with her…proving that there really is nothing scarier than a scorned woman. Or a hungry woman—which is why the “Love is Blind” event also offers a gourmet dinner & haunted attraction for two special! And to top it all off, there will be a cash bar. This event is more heaven than hell. You can get your tickets to the dinner and attraction combo here.
The Carver family of Paxton Manor will take you on a twisted trip through the trail of wreckage that love leaves behind. The haunted house is offering a special “Blackout Tour” with just some romantic glow to guide you through the terrors lurking throughout the rooms of the real life 19th century mansion. Want to step up your game? You can show your date that chivalry isn’t dead by purchasing a R.I.P. (Really Important Person) Pass that fast tracks you to the front of the line—here. By purchasing a ticket, you’ll also show some love to the community. Every penny from the event goes into local programming for people with disabilities.

This haunted attraction will feature over 50 actors dressed up as your favorite villains—and they will absolutely touch you. The website specifically warns that if you do not wish to be touched by the actors, DON’T BUY A TICKET. What other date could guarantee that you get some sort of human (or sub-human) contact?
