Kevin McTurk’s Creepy Puppet Short THE MILL AT CALDER’S END Now On Blu-Ray

The first time I saw the excellent short film THE MILL AT CALDER’S END, it caught me completely off guard. Last year, the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood, California celebrated the great Mario Bava with a double feature of BLACK SUNDAY and BLACK SABBATH, two of his most celebrated works. The legendary Barbara Steele was in attendance for a Q & A, and not only because she starred in BLACK SUNDAY, but because she appeared in this little short film that played before both features as well.

Without any introduction or set-up, I had a tough time figuring out why the “actors” in THE MILL AT CALDER’S END looked so… well, bizarre. Their appearances looked so real and yet something was off. It was the “uncanny valley” and my brain couldn’t wrap itself around what was creeping me out about these characters. Was it all CG animation? No, the sets all look too real. That’s when it finally dawned on me that I was watching a film with some of the most authentically realistic looking puppets ever.

And when the apparition appeared as portrayed by a gorgeous Barbara Steele puppet, looking very much like she does in Bava’s BLACK SUNDAY, I knew this was something special.
