Is Lionsgate Finally Bringing Back The SAW Franchise?

I miss the SAW franchise. I really do.

After the release and success of the first SAW way back in 2004, the franchise became something of a bonding experience for my cousin and I, as we both grew up the two horror-loving black sheep of the family. As often happens, there were a few years there we lost track of each other, but with each new SAW sequel, we’d plan to catch the midnight screening the night before release and it brought us closer together than ever. We looked forward to every Halloween because we knew (at least for a couple of years there) we could always count on a new SAW. But the franchise has remained dormant since the “final chapter,” SAW 3D (aka SAW 7), in 2010.

We’ve heard rumblings for the last 6 years about various attempts Lionsgate has made to re-launch the series, none of which have come to fruition. Rumor through the grapevine is that many of the people responsible for the previous movies all went in with various pitches for how to properly continue or reboot the saga of Jigsaw and none, for whatever reason, managed to blow Lionsgate’s socks off.

Has someone finally cracked it?

The Tracking-Board reports the exclusive that Lionsgate have tapped writing duo Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger to script what is tentatively being called SAW: LEGACY. The two do have some genre cred having written the SORORITY ROW remake, as well as PIRANHA 3D and PIRANHA 3DD. The site goes on to say that series creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell are serving as exec producers on this 8th installment.

Please let this be the beginning of the return of Jigsaw! We’ve missed you & we’re ready to play a game again!
