The 10 Coolest Horror Toys Coming in 2016
January 25, 2016
As we highlighted
here on Blumhouse last week, 2015 brought some pretty awesome horror toys into our collections. Thanks to companies like NECA and Funko, there has truly never been a better time to be a horror fan who collects toys – you’re never too old! – and one thing is certain when looking ahead to the near future: 2016 is going to be another great year on the toy front.
Here are 10 of the coolest horror toys headed our way this year!
1) ASH VS. EVIL DEAD - NECA
One of the best things to happen in 2015 was of course Starz’ ASH VS. EVIL DEAD, which saw Bruce Campbell reprise his most iconic role for the first time in over 20 years. NECA has recently given a whole lot of love to the EVIL DEAD franchise and they’re not going to be leaving the new series out in the cold. Set for release this coming spring, the ASH VS. EVIL DEAD toy line will include at least one version of the older, wiser (but not really) Ash Williams, as well as a figure of the show’s most memorable Deadite.
2) PART 2 LEATHERFACE - NECA
Speaking of NECA, they’ve been beefing up our Leatherface toy collections big time these past couple years, releasing two retro-style figures based on his looks in the original TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE and even coloring the hulking brute green for a highly unique video game toy. In 2016, TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE PART 2’s Leatherface joins the 8″ retro-style line, and above you’ll see the package art and prototype head sculpt. Will Chop Top be joining him? We can only hope!
3) KRAMPUS STATUES - WETA
Nobody creates horror icons quite like Michael Dougherty, whose holiday horror film KRAMPUS was loaded with spooky characters just begging to be adored by fans. The movie’s awesome practical effects were handled by New Zealand company Weta, and they’ll be releasing a trio of KRAMPUS collectible statues in the third quarter of this year. The Cherub, Dark Elf, and Krampus statues can be pre-ordered over on Weta’s website – where you’ll also find a replica of the film’s bell.
4) CHUCKY VINYL TOY - MEZCO
A couple years back, Mezco released a stylized vinyl figure of Chucky based on the latter films in the CHILD’S PLAY franchise – BRIDE/SEED OF CHUCKY – and this year they give the same treatment to the classic Good Guy doll seen in the earlier installments. Due out in February/March, and now available for pre-order on the Mezco website, this latest Chucky collectible is armed with a knife and features seven points of articulation. Aint he cute?!
5) GHOSTBUSTERS REBOOT FIGURES - MATTEL
Perhaps the most controversial movie being released this year is Paul Feig’s all-female GHOSTBUSTERS reboot, which many fans have already written off. A shame, because all signs point to it being a film to look forward to in 2016. As Feig recently noted, a massive toy line is planned that will span several different companies, and he showed off this sneak peek of Mattel’s upcoming line of 6″ toys based on the brand new characters. Funko, Diamond Select, and LEGO will also be releasing GHOSTBUSTERS reboot toys of their own.
6) BAT GREMLIN - NECA
At last year’s San Diego Comic-Con, NECA showed off a prototype for a massive toy based on GREMLINS 2’s so-called Bat Gremlin, and it was originally headed our way last October. It was unfortunately pushed back shortly thereafter, but have no fear, because Bat Gremlin is flying into our collections this coming February. The fully-articulated deluxe figure stands 6″ tall and has an 18″ wingspan, and it will come with a stand that allows you to display the creature “in-flight.” As the company notes, it’s one of their most highly-requested figures of all time.
7) ALIEN CONCEPT FIGURE - NECA
One of NECA’s most popular offerings is their ALIEN toy line, which grows bigger and bigger with each passing year. In April of this year, Series 7 of their core line of ALIEN action figures is hitting shelves, and it will include this 9″ figure based on H.R. Giger’s original Xenomorph suit design, which featured a translucent flesh tone. Of course, the decision was ultimately made to go all black, but this unique figure pays tribute to Giger’s unused concept. That’s NECA for ya: always stepping outside the box.
8) LIFE-SIZE ALIEN EGG - NECA
Fans of the ALIEN franchise are likely going to go broke this year, because NECA will also be releasing a life-size replica Xenomorph egg that also includes a life-size replica Face Hugger. The egg stands a massive 36″ tall and features articulated flaps that can be opened up, and the removable Face Hugger will be found inside. LED lights inside the base illuminate the egg from within, creating what NECA describes as an “otherworldly glow.” Yea. You need this. We all need this.
9) AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON STATUE - POP CULTURE SHOCK COLLECTIBLES
Artist Jerry Macaluso, who founded the company SOTA Toys, now runs Pop Culture Shock Collectibles, and one of their most hotly-anticipated 2016 releases is this American Werewolf in London 1:4 scale statue. Measuring over 10″ high and 21″ long, the must-own collectible will begin shipping out in September, and the regular edition is already sold out. A special variant, exclusive to Pop Culture Shock’s website, is still available at the time of writing this post. So get on that if you want it.
10) ASH WILLIAMS 12" FIGURE - SIDESHOW COLLECTIBLES
In addition to NECA, high-end company Sideshow Collectibles will also be giving some love to the EVIL DEAD franchise this year, releasing this sixth scale figure of Ash as he was seen in sequel EVIL DEAD 2. Measuring 12″ tall, the deluxe edition offering is easily the most impressive Ash collectible to date, and he comes with everything from a boomstick to Henrietta’s severed head – the Sideshow exclusive edition also includes Ash’s possessed right hand. The figure is expected to ship in late 2016.
