Given how many genre icons we lost last year, it’s easy to look back on 2015 and think of it as a pretty bad year for the horror world. And in that regard, it certainly was. But looking on the bright side, 2015 brought some truly exceptional new horror films into our lives, and on the toy front, filled up our shelves with no shortage of awesome new collectibles.
So let’s focus on the positive and take a look at the 10 coolest horror toys released in 2015!
1) JAWS REACTION FIGURES - FUNKO
Funko’s line of ReAction Figures is one of the coolest to come along in recent years, as the company tends to give love to pop culture properties that had never previously received their own toys. And they won over horror hearts big time last year with a wave of JAWS action figures, which included Quint, Brody, Hooper, and even a mega-sized figure of the shark. At Comic-Con last year, a “bloody” variant of the shark was also made available, which featured an alternate Quint figure.
2) MRS. VOORHEES/YOUNG JASON TWO-PACK - NECA
NECA has for many years been the reigning king of awesome convention exclusives, and at the 2015 San Diego Comic-Con, they once again proved how much they love us horror fans by offering up an incredible retro-style two pack of Mrs. Voorhees and young Jason – as portrayed in the original FRIDAY THE 13TH by Ari Lehman. It was an well-timed tribute to late actress Betsy Palmer, who unfortunately passed away shortly before the event.
3) NINTENDO JASON VOORHEES (THEME MUSIC PACKAGING) - NECA
It was at the 2013 San Diego Comic-Con that NECA unveiled a highly unique Jason Voorhees action figure based on the Friday the 13th Nintendo game, which kick-started an entire line of video game-inspired toys. Last year, they added to the line with an upgraded version of that purple and blue Jason toy, packaged this time alongside Mrs. Voorhees’ 8-bit severed head. The packaging, unlike the 2013 version of the figure, plays the NES game’s theme song when opened up.
4) ULTIMATE JASON VOORHEES - NECA
This year marks the 30th anniversary of FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 6: JASON LIVES, and NECA celebrated by giving that film’s Jason Voorhees the “Ultimate Edition” treatment at the tail end of last year. Released in December, the deluxe 7″ figure is housed in a 30th anniversary commemorative box and comes with a removable mask, machete, knife, fence post, and tombstone. Fans of JASON LIVES should also grab NECA’s retro-style Part 6 Jason, which came out last year as well.
5) ULTIMATE LEATHERFACE - NECA
Another horror icon who received NECA’s “Ultimate Edition” treatment last year was Leatherface, and the 7″ deluxe figure paid tribute to the 40th anniversary of Tobe Hooper’s THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE. Countless Leatherface figures have been released over the years, many by NECA, but this is arguably the best one ever made. The figure includes two interchangeable heads, a knife, mallet, meat hook, cleaver and vinyl apron, and it’s packaged in a 40th anniversary window box.
6) ATARI LEATHERFACE - NECA
Leatherface got a whole lot of love in the toy world last year, as Funko finally turned him into a ReAction Figure and NECA released a retro-style figure of the big guy based on his dinner outfit in the original classic. The most unique, however, was of course this wacky and wonderful Leatherface toy, inspired by Wizard Video’s 1982 TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE video game for the Atari 2600. Horror figures don’t get much uglier than this, and that’s why we can’t help but love it.
7) FREDDY KRUEGER POP! VINYL (SYRINGE FINGERS) - FUNKO
Freddy certainly wasn’t left out in the cold last year, as NECA released retro-style Krueger figures based on the second and third films in the ELM STREET franchise, along with one inspired by the NES video game. But it was Funko who stepped way outside the box, unleashing this Dream Warriors POP! vinyl figure into Hot Topic stores. The toy is of course based on Taryn’s memorable death scene in the film, wherein Freddy sprouted syringe-fingers. You’re so cool, Funko.
8) ELLEN RIPLEY (TWO VERSIONS) - NECA
One of NECA’s most notable offerings last year was the fourth series of their ever-expanding ALIEN line, which included not one but two action figures of badass final girl Ellen Ripley. They’re far from the first Ripley toys ever made, but what makes these figures so very special is that they’re the first to come equipped with Sigourney Weaver’s approval on using her likeness. What does that mean? It means they look more like Weaver than any Ripley toys from the past. Series 5 of the line featured a Ripley toy based on ALIENS.
9) REGAN MACNEIL POP! VINYL - FUNKO
I’m of the mind that there aren’t nearly enough EXORCIST collectibles out there, so I was pretty delighted to learn last year that Funko was adding Regan MacNeil to their mega-popular POP! vinyl line. The toy depicts Regan in a blue night gown with restraints tied to her wrists, and she’s fittingly covered in pea soup. I mean vomit. On the POP! front last year, Funko also turned SHAUN OF THE DEAD’s Shaun and Ed into cute vinyl figures.
10) CRITTERS VINYL TOY - AMOK TIME
Taking a page out of Funko’s playbook, Amok Time made a cute and cuddly vinyl figure of their own last year, and who better to get that treatment than one of those lovable Crites from the Critters franchise? Part of the company’s Monstarz line – which we recently profiled here on Blumhouse – the collectible vinyl figure measures 5″ tall and features realistic hair. Critters turns 30 this year, so we encourage you to celebrate by grabbing one of these little monsters over in the Amok Time shop.
