American Horror Story: Hotel
“She Gets Revenge”
Rather than just recapping the most recent episode of AMERICAN HORROR STORY: HOTEL, each week we are going to break it down into the most interesting, weird, delightful, and mind-boggling bits… like these!
Last week’s episode was called “She Wants Revenge.” This week’s episode is titled “She Gets Revenge.” The only question is, who is the she? Last week, since the focus was on Ramona’s backstory, I assume she was the one wanting revenge; however, an argument could easily be made that all the “shes” on the show want revenge. But who actually “gets” it this week? I am leaning towards Iris and Liz, since they shot the place up in the final scenes.
In the first act of the episode, the Countess meets with Natacha while Donovan meets with Valentino. It is a beautifully cut sequence which ends in the death of both Valentinos. The scene reminds me of a modern, bloody version of O. Henry’s “The Gift of the Magi,” in which a woman sells her hair to buy her husband a watch chain, while her husband sells his watch to buy her hair combs.
When the Countess is reporting her new husband missing, she has to look a little demure. I find her look in this scene to be reminiscent of Marlene Dietrich. Dietrich was a German-born actress whose biggest successes came in the 1930s. She was bisexual, often dressed androgynously, and is best remembered for performing a song dressed in a tuxedo and kissing a woman.
John and Alex
The couple is in the process of reconciling. But how will Alex react when she finds out that John getting his act together requires violent murder? Sure, she may essentially be a vampire, but until tonight’s episode, when the couple locked the kids in the room with Ramona, she never killed anyone.
Max and his tribe of caustic vampire tots is like Lost Boys: The New Batch.
