Meir Zarchi’s 1978 cult classic I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE has got to be one of, if not the most notorious exploitation genre picture ever made. And while it’s not exactly the movie I break out and watch with a group of friends on a Friday night to unwind, I do completely understand and accept it’s importance in horror history.
In the film, Camille Keaton plays Jennifer, an aspiring writer who retreats to a cabin in upstate New York to concentrate on finishing up her novel. She unfortunately crosses paths with four local men who begin harassing her, until it eventually leads to a brutal gang-rape and attempted murder. Jennifer survives, recuperates and plots out some of the most well-deserved and vicious revenge tactics on her assailants. It’s all pretty nasty stuff, but it’s also a one of a kind movie and the beginning of these types of revenge films.
Because of it’s notoriety, I was fairly shocked and surprised when a remake was produced back in 2010, now in the post-“torture-porn” era of horror. It was exactly what I thought it would be, which was exploitation. But it was successful enough to spawn two more sequels! Seriously. We live in a world where there’s a I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE 3.
Word comes now that there’s a new I SPIT ON YOU GRAVE feature titled I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE: DEJA VU, which just completed principle photography and is currently in post-production. Given the success of the previous sequels, I’m not surprised there’s another one on it’s way, but I am intrigued because of the people involved in this interpretation. I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE: DEJA VU is written and directed by Meir Zarchi and for the first time ever features Camille Keaton reprising her role as Jennifer, nearly 40 years after the original’s release. It has nothing to do with the remake, or it’s sequels, but instead is a direct continuation to the original I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE. Terry Zarchi and Jan O’Connell are producing and new to the cast is Jamie Bernadette playing Jennifer’s daughter Christy.
According to the press release on the official website, here’s the synopsis:
Following her brutal rape, Jennifer wrote a best-selling account of her ordeal and of the controversial trial in which she was accused of taking the law into her own hands and ruthlessly killing her assailants. In the small town where the rape and revenge took place, the relatives of the four rapists she killed are furious that the court declared her not guilty and resolve to take justice into their own hands.
In this new chapter, Jennifer Hills is joined by her daughter Christy (Jamie Bernadette) as well as a variety of new characters, including Maria Olsen who plays the role of Johnny’s wife, the gas station attendant Jennifer castrated; Jim Tavare in the role of Herman, whose son Matthew was hung by Jennifer, as well as by actors Jonathan Peacy, Jeremy Ferdman, Holgie Forrester, Roy Allen and Alexandra Kenworthy.
“I always envisioned Camille Keaton returning to continue the saga of Jennifer Hills,” said Zarchi. “Getting together with Camille to film the sequel was a surreal, deja-vu-like experience.”
Below are a handful of behind-the-scenes photos from the production. We’ll keep you posted on it’s inevitable release as it gets closer.
