Meat that is still twitching, even after being butchered: really really fresh, or a science experiment gone horribly wrong?
That is the question Cheng Tan had to ask herself. The Chinese woman came home with a fresh cut of meat. When she unwrapped it, it was twitching. Fearing there may be worms or parasites in it, she cut it open, but found nothing untoward inside. Yet, it still kept twitching.
The strange video went viral, allegedly turning carnivores vegetarian.
Lv Suwen, from the Chinese animal health department, says it is perfectly safe to eat “twitching” meat, and that it could actually be a sign of freshness. “The central nervous system is dead but the nerve endings in the muscles are still firing, resulting in the jumping, because the nerves are not yet dead. This will stop after a short time.”
So twitching meat is not actually a Frankenstein experiment gone horribly wrong (or right?), but a natural phenomenon. I still wouldn’t eat it.
