If you’re old enough to remember when there were just one or two basic versions of the classic board game Monopoly, you’re probably exhausted with how many variations on the theme have been invented since – from versions featuring pictures of cute animals to all your favorite sports teams, science and history subjects, to comic books and movies (and some truly awful attempts that I won’t get into here). But this year, fans of H.P. Lovecraft – or just fans of totally awesome monster stuff – might actually take notice of this new development.
Yes, boys and girls of all ages: there is not only a version of Monopoly dedicated to Lovecraft’s beloved Cthulhu Mythos, but also a pretty wicked variant on the family dice game Yahtzee featuring a truly awesome Cthulhu-shaped dice cup.
Aside from looking badass, Cthulhu Yahtzee is still pretty much the same as the regular version; it just feels so much more ominous rolling a Full House on sickly green dice from of the tentacled head of an Elder God (if you’re really living large, roll five-of-a-kind and chant “I’a-Tze’eh!”)
But the Monopoly board, with its HPL-inspired cards and tokens, is really something to behold. Instead of buying up real estate and bleeding your opponents’ bank accounts, the game pits you against fellow occult experts in a quest to inherit the mantle of “Great Old One.” According to the game description, “Whether you win or not, you lose and become one of Cthulhu’s mindless zombies.” Yay!
Both games are currently being offered by Entertainment Earth, but you might want to pounce on them soon, because they’re probably going to sell like crazy. Cthulhu Collector’s Edition Monopoly is selling for $39.99, and Cthulhu Collector’s Edition Yahtzee for $29.99.
