It’s officially Halloween season and the fine fiends over at Creature Features (located at 2904 W Magnolia Blvd) in Burbank have kicked it off right with a special tribute art show for the 1987 cult classic THE MONSTER SQUAD; Fred Dekker’s loving homage to the Universal Monster Movies which features a group of teenagers going up against the likes of Dracula, Frankenstein’s monster, the Wolfman, The Mummy and the Gillman. While it didn’t exactly ignite the box office upon it’s release, it did over the years garner a tremendous cult following thanks to frequent cable airings and the power of VHS & the home video market!
The reception for the month long exhibit kicked off on Saturday September 26th and it was a full house! What struck me immediately after scanning the first few paintings was that even for the artists displayed, this was a true labor of love. The reverence and care taken into capturing some of the films most memorable moments whether it be Phoebe holding hands with Frankenstein’s monster, or the infamous “Wolfman’s got nards” scene or even Frank falling backwards into the time vortex, I couldn’t help but wonder how proud all of this would’ve made the movie’s writer/director Fred Dekker, since I found myself getting emotional and I had nothing to do with the movie! Well, I didn’t have to wonder long because Dekker was in attendance celebrating along with the artists and fans. He even contributed his own “Creature Stole My Twinkie” piece, while on the opposite wall, his son sketched Dracula for his piece titled “Let It Begin.”
